Tower of London

The Tower of London is a royal fortress on the north bank of the River Thames. The White Tower that gives the castle its name was built around 1078 under William the Conqueror. Over nine centuries it has served as a royal residence, prison, mint and armoury; today it houses the Crown Jewels and is guarded by the Yeoman Warders (the "Beefeaters"). It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
