Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano)
Milan Cathedral was begun in 1386 under Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti; the façade was completed in 1813 and the final details only in 1965. Built of white Candoglia marble, it carries about 135 spires, the tallest crowned since 1774 by the gilded statue of the Madonna (the "Madonnina"). It is the largest church in Italy and one of the largest in the world.
