The Brandenburg Gate was built in 1788–1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans in the neoclassical style, modelled on the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis. It is crowned by the Quadriga of the goddess Victoria by Johann Gottfried Schadow. During the Cold War the gate stood inside the restricted border strip, and after 1989 it became the symbol of German reunification.
